Jojo Mayer of The Screaming Headless Torsos has the Sabian AAX El Sabor Picante Hand Crash Cymbal in his drum setup.
The Sabian AAX El Sabor Picante Hand Crash cymbal is specifically designed for Latin drummers and percussionists to slap by hand.
We think Sabian Product Specialist Kevin Laskey describes this cymbal best when he says, "Though it was designed for Latin players, the Picante Hand Crash is a cymbal for percussionists playing any style of music. And while it is named Hand Crash, the center half and raw, non-hammered bell of the Picante Crash are for playing by stick."
Even its very name, El Sabor (the flavor) and Picante (hot), hints at the unique character and sonic tendencies these cymbals bring to your line. Available in 16" and 18" sizes, these thin-edged cymbals have three very distinct playing surfaces.
You can play two of them with a stick and the other one is for playing by hand. The unlathed, medium-weight center section is a dry ride area, while the lathed, extra thin outer edge is more sensitive for slapping out hot, shimmering sounds by hand.
Inspired by such legendary percussionists as Perazzo and Richie 'Gajate' Garcia, the Picante Hand Crash is handcrafted by Sabian craftsmen from B20 bronze alloy, regarded as the most durable and musical of all the cymbal metals. Its unique appearance and sound is also shaped by the precise hammering and semi-lathed playing surface.
